Frequently Asked Questions
What is a standard tip percentage?
18-20% is the current standard tip for good service at sit-down restaurants in the United States. 15% was traditional but is now considered lower-end. 20% has become more common, especially in cities. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate. Delivery typically warrants 15-20% with a $3-5 minimum.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal (before sales tax is added). However, many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity, and this is also acceptable. The difference is usually small. If using a credit card machine, check whether the suggested tip amounts are based on pre-tax or post-tax totals.
Do I need to tip on takeout orders?
Tipping on takeout is optional but appreciated. 0-10% is common for takeout since there's no table service. Consider tipping if: the order was complex, staff helped with special requests, or you're a regular customer. During busy times or for large orders, 10-15% is generous. No tip is expected for simple pickup orders from counter-service restaurants.
How do I split a bill with tip fairly?
The simplest method: calculate the total with tip, then divide by number of people. Everyone pays the same amount. If some people had more expensive meals: (1) Split tip proportionally based on individual bills, or (2) Have each person tip 18-20% on their own portion. Many apps and calculators can help with complex splits. Be generous when rounding.
What if service was bad - should I still tip?
For poor service, you can tip less (10-12%), but avoid not tipping entirely unless service was truly terrible. Consider that: (1) Kitchen mistakes aren't your server's fault, (2) Your server may be having a bad day, (3) Restaurants may be understaffed. If service was unacceptable, speak to a manager. In the US, servers often earn below minimum wage and rely on tips.
